Tony Deleo (El Diablo)
Wednesday, 4/7/10

With no chase and Northeast forecast I attempted to break the existing out and back record of 70 miles.  The lift in Santa Barbara was smooth to about 4800'.  It was pretty much a "cake" walk to Ojai.  Went to 6500' at White Ledge and never got low.  In front of Chiefs I went to 7500' and went on glide to The Bluffs.

The thermals were drifting from various directions. Left the Bluffs with 7500' on glide for Santa Paula Ridge.  The day looked like it had real potential with the San Gabriels up ahead.  As soon as I started to glide from Puckers to Santa Paula Ridge I was getting nothing but sink and had the feeling I was in the lee from the north east.  I arrived at Santa Paula Peak (36 miles) and immediately turned back towards Ojai.  I made it back to the base of Pucker's with 3500' and struggled to climb out in the west wind.  I couldn't make Twin Peaks work so I headed off to the Stooges, with no results I headed back to Twin Peaks where after hanging on for quiet awhile I was able to climb out at the turn in the road below Chiefs to 7500".

My game plan was to try and climb above the west wind, top out at White Ledge and then fight my way back upwind to SB.  I went on glide from Chiefs my next turn was at Bump 3 which wasn't working nor was the terrain uphill of that location.  I finally flew over the Plateau in front of White Ledge and was working the East Wall of Coyote Canyon.  Unfortunately the west wind and the lateness of the day seemed to diminish any thermal activity. I landed next to Highway 150- flight time 4 hours.
