Sunday 11/3 (the day prior)
SD / 9:51 / Today (Sunday) looks treacherously windy from the north.
SD / 9:53 / Monday (tomorrow) looks like a good day for various task from
Santa Barbara.
There is a capping inversion providing protection from stronger north wind above
ridgeline. Max altitude is limited, so getting up and over Casitas Pass
could be an issue, but the capping inversion is a bit higher in Ojai and our
mid-day lapse rate below the inversion in SB looks robust up to a little over
ridgeline (mid 4s), then trending weaker (in SB) later in the afternoon.
The beginning of a week-long series of Santa Ana offshore katabatic events with drainage off the high desert down the rivers. Monday’s episode is forecasted to have a health lapse rate and associated diurnal upriver draw in the afternoon toward Fillmore. Santa Barbara often offers good flying during Santa Ana events while drainage paths further east are raked by strong wind.
Could be a potential day to attempt the season long Hoedown task from SB to
Ojai and back? Expect some headwind on the way back but currently it looks
manageable for 2 liners due to an extended clock if you launch early.
For slower gliders, the late day lapse rate looks better in Ojai than SB so
perhaps tagging the Topa Bluffs and heading back to NHS or continuing on to
Fillmore might be a good option?
Should be able to start early from the lower launches on Monday. You will want an early start if you are attempting a long task. Will likely be able to get off EJ mid-day, but you can likely start earlier by launching lower (the Skyport)?
SD / 16:10 / 8:15 at East Beach tomorrow (Monday).
Would be good to have the Eagle Van if it is available?
Doc (crew) is meeting at my house in Carp at 7:45. Budgeting a half hour
to get to east beach in rush hour traffic. Would prefer to carpool to East
Beach from Carp.
8:15 might sound early, but we fell back on the time so it is equivalent to 9:15
this past Saturday.
Doc didn't have a radio last Wednesday, so if anyone has a spare that might help
with retrieve?
Sandra Acres / 16:15 response to SD / I'll bring the van
Patricia Connor / 17:38 / I’m going to go up later around 11 if anyone wants to carpool
Mike Perrin / 18:05 response to Patricia / I can do 11
Mike Cozza / 20:17 response to SD / I’ll pack a spare radio
Chris Marianetti / 20:23 response to SD / I can depart from Tom's house (Carpenteria) at 7:45am, and I have room for three (or possibly 4 depending on gear). Just let me know.
Monday 11/4 (the day of)
Carl Cadenasso / 07:15 / I’ll join the van at lower Parma
Neal Michaelis / 07:41 / Anyone planning on going up from East beach a little later than 815?
Patricia Connor / 07:42 / I'm going at 11
CJ Jessettt / 07:44 response to Neal / 9:15
Christopher Segler / 08:01 / Planning to head up from Parma at about 915-930
Jenna Schaal-O'Connor / 08:34 response to Chris / I'd like to join
Sandra Acres / 08:39 / Van is full
SD / 08:39 / Eagle Van departing East Beach with 18 / loaded 1 more at Lower. 19 headed up in Eagle..
Carl Cadenasso / 8:39 response to Christopher Segler / I’ll join you at lower Parma
Robert Fitzgerald / 8:55 / 3 of us at lower with room for one more
Christopher Segler / 9:01 / Will be at lower Parma in seven minutes and have room
Jeremiah Haney / 9:16 response to Patricia / I will be at Parma at 11.
James Acres / 9:27 / any updates from launch? we have several waves going up today, it'd be cool if each wave of pilots updated launch conditions ...
CJ Jessett / 9:30 / Uber going up in 5 from EB
Cort Flinchbaugh / 9:34 / Will be at UP around 10, space for 2
James Acres / 9:35 response to Cort / I'll join
Sandra 9:35 / Skyport is working nicely
Sandra 9:37 / So is EJ. No OTB. Nice gentle cycles
Derek Musashe / 10:30 response to Jeremiah Haney / Is there still a group going up at 11 and do you have room for one more?
Patricia Connor / 10:39 / Yes! EB at 11
JohannesAS / 10:42 / Noon EB anyone?
Zain Axe / 10:52 / I can’t make it, but it looks like the Avenue could work between 12:00 - 4:00 today.
James Acres / 10:59 / ej blowing in nice

Derek Musashe / 11:54 / Just got up to Skyport. Perfect conditions. Absolutely no need to launch higher for anyone coming up late
Bernardo Fanti / 12:06 / Anyone going up again soon? I can swing by Parma in 30 minutes. I can fit 3-4 additional pilots, or looking for a ride up.
Robert Fitzgerald / 12:09 response to Bernardo / A couple people at lower Parma would like to collaborate
Dave Patterson / Rolling through both parmas 105. Id rather not wait but I'll take folks of they need a ride
Derek Musashe / 12:52 / Didn’t love it up there. 10-15mph of west wind at altitude. Heading to EB now.
Patricia Connor / 13:02 / I didn’t love it either
Sandra Acres / 13:17 / The west got strong all of a sudden!!!
Patricia Connor / 13:47 / It was crazy.
I had the beach, then I barely had Parma
Sandra Acres / 13:52 / I thought I had enough height to glide anywhere safe, but then it went way downady down for ever to end up landing backward in the strong west on a hill… crazy day.
Jeff Longcor / 14:35 / Tom is making his way back up behind WL heading west currently with 4300ft. He's tagged Painted Cave to the W and over to SP Peak to the East. If he can make it back to SB, he'll be in contention for the out and back record.
Jeff Longcor / 14:46 / Aw he's turned back, couldn't quite clear the col behind white ledge, looks like he's headed back to Ojai.
James Acres / 15:33 / james and goose LOK between fillmore and piru
Mike Perrin / 17:35 response to Patricia comment about crazy / Me too!
I finally realized I wasn’t getting to the beach. But, I had gone too far East
and couldn’t get back to the Upper/Lower Parma either. I landed up on the ridge
road near East Parma.
Crazy fun day!

SD / 21:52 / [My KMZ] for today.
103.8 miles around 3 turn points (4 leg total)
Skyport
6.8 miles westbound to the Painted Cave Windmill
43.3 miles eastbound to Santa Paula Ridge
20.0 miles westbound to White Ledge
33.7 miles eastbound to the west side of Piru
6 hours 55 minutes 10 seconds
The Santa Barbara pilots swept the podium (top dozen or more spots) with the longest SLOFD flights in the United States today (again / as per XCfind).
Goose Acres had the longest SLOFD flight leg of the day (in SB and the United States / again). Goose launched from EJ, turned at the VOR, and landed with her dad just east of (past) Piru, 57.6 miles SLOFD (from the VOR to her end point), her first time over Casitas Pass and her personal longest flight from Santa Barbara.
I (SD) had the 2nd longest SLOFD leg at 56.9 miles from the Painted Cave Windmill to the west side of Piru. Perhaps an old slow tortoise? but the longest collection of legs for the day, 103.8 miles around 3 turn points (4 legs), Skyport westbound to the Painted Cave Windmill, eastbound to Santa Paula Ridge, westbound to White Ledge, then eastbound to Piru (turned around to land at the Buckhorn soccer field). First off at 9:46:43 and last down at 4:41:53 PST (6 hours 55 minutes 10 seconds), landing 15 minutes before sunset.
James Acres took the 3rd spot. He launched from EJ and landed with Goose but didn’t do a westbound leg. His SLOFD was 54.0 miles.
A bunch of other great flights with numerous personal-best Including Sandra Acres who tagged the VOR and landed out in Casitas Pass behind Chismahoo, her longest flight to date from Santa Barbara.
Bummy launched from Nuthouse and landed with (or near) James and Goose a bit past Piru.
At least 6 pilots successfully completed the season long Hoedown task to Nordhoff Peak and back, including Mike Cozza, Andrew Byron, Dilan Benedetti, Amy Le, Nick Wilder, Dylan Laughlin. Some did more than the task required, turning at the west end of the fishbowl before getting our course eastbound.
Thanks again to the Eagle Van and Doc (crew) for collecting all the Santa Clara River pilots.
