SD post flight feedback to Cedar via Telegram DM

Cedar, I reviewed you flight and do have some comments but it might be easier to discuss verbally, preferably in front of a computer screen if you happen to be in Carpinteria this week?

I edited your IGC file (as noted in the file comments) to adjust your altitude.  I made the attached Google Earth KMZ file with color coded legs and posted your Ayvri solo web animation at https://ayvri.com/scene/g0jg73pnjo/ckji2gfmi0001376gr93cqzkb

Your original IGC file has numerous (about a dozen) missing data segments up to about 10 seconds in length that show up as straight lines in the 3D flight path that bridge across the data gaps.  Your IGC recorder appears to be the Flyskyhy Soaring App version 7.0 running on an iPhone 11.  There was also lag in the altitude where it was slow to catch up and seemed to be a half dozen seconds behind.

I would recommend you use a better recording option that is more reliable and accurate.  XC tracer seems to be accurate and is inexpensive.  I use the Flymaster GPS SD plus something.  Chris Garcia likely knows more than I do, but I edit a lot of IGC files and see various errors from different setups.

You might also want to review the photos from one of my 2014 flights that includes illustrations of the route westbound across Hwy 33 up White Ledge Ridge at:
http://paraglide.net/log/2014/10-04/1_boutique_fish_bowl.htm
but that flight was crossing mid-day (but it does include an informative photo set).

I’ve attached a recent (12/18/2020) KMZ of an aborted late day Casitas Pass Crossing attempt.  I haven’t posted the flight to my log yet because I’ve got a problem with my web authoring computer.

And there is log of a 2014 failed late day attempt where I was able to re-launch posted at: http://paraglide.net/log/2014/01-25/1_oat_to_east_divide.htm
(I think the last time I "landed out" attempting to cross Casitas Pass?)

And a log of a 2013 flight from the Skyport where I landed out in Casitas Pass that has some photos showing your LZ from Friday and our re-launch location off Superior Fuel Break posted at:
http://paraglide.net/log/2013/13_02-10/1_skyport_to_lake_casitas.htm
no KMZ because I didn’t start flying with a GPS until 2014.

And a log of a 4/2/2012 flight with an unsuccessful return across casitas pass late in the day where flushed and couldn’t re-launch (too late in the day) so had to hike out in the dark, but no photos or KMZ, posted at
http://paraglide.net/log/2012/12_04-07/1_alternator_ojai_divide_hike.htm (the only time I've "landed out" in The Pass and been unable to re-launch)

Generally, it is more difficult to cross Casitas Pass Westbound compared to Eastbound because westbound is uphill into deeper terrain.  Attempting it in late day is even more problematic because it us often upwind, uphill, and into the shade.  You might be able to fly around White Ledge with some chance of success mid-day (if cloudbase is too low to over the top), but late in the day the better option is to go up and over.  If I can't get "up and over" Westbound late in the day, I'll turn back.  In my somewhat experienced opinion, your choice on Friday to go around White Ledge, upwind late in the day, had zero chance of success, but the your adventure and experience acquired were priceless?
