Pine North Side to Dry Canyon?
by Sarah Lockwood / copied from email chain

Yesterday was a really great season opener at pine.  Julio and Brian’s mom were retrieve which made for an easy logistical day and speedy pickups in the hot desert.  Pine mnt road was closed so we hiked up for about an hour+ to the north launch.  It was blowing in nicely, and Mitch made the right call that we needed to get off ASAP before it switched.  Launched around 11.  Far off we could see the first clouds popping over Pinos and Frazier.

First few pilots launched, and the move was to get up and bench back and up towards Reyes immediately.  Those that did enjoyed hitting the convergence with heights up to 11-12k.  A couple of us who launched late and didn’t make moves quick enough were rewarded with such strong lower draw that it started tearing apart lower thermals and made it difficult to get back up.  Let’s just say the day was ON, and damn did that convergence show itself.  I watched the sky go from blue to OD over Pine over the course of an hour (all pilots were long gone or on the ground by then).  A beautiful convergence set up over Lockwood Valley just as Mitch and Logan had predicted, so thank you weather yodas!  Strong active piloting and great decision making was made by all.  Makes me proud to fly with you gapers!!  I’ll let the pilots that crossed deep speak for themselves, but it’s fricken cool that we have such a rad and legit mountain site an hour or so from Carp. Lastly, shout out to BK for an epic birthday flight!!  Him, Logan, and Lombard all made it over the 5
